What Is the Meaning of Passover?

1 Min Read

God is holy and we are sinners. Can God show mercy to sinners and at the same time uphold His justice? The events of the Passover demonstrate that He can, as R.C. Sproul explains in today’s message from his video teaching series Dust to Glory.

In the book of Exodus, the tenth and final plague on Egypt was the most devastating of all. When the angel of death passed through the land, all the Egyptians’ firstborn sons and all the firstborn of their livestock died (Exod. 12:29). But the Israelites were left untouched. The angel “passed over” them because they had spread the blood of a lamb on the doorframe of their homes, as God had commanded.

In the New Testament, Jesus is called “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29). At the Last Supper, He showed that His impending death would be the ultimate Passover. God’s grace and wrath would be manifested on the cross as never before in order to accomplish salvation.
