Abort Abortion: The Bottom of the Slippery Slope
In a previous post, I discussed those who support abortion by dehumanizing the fetus—claiming that it is nothing more than a lump of tissue. Sadly, however, those who deny the scientifically verifiable fact that the unborn child is a human being are not in the worst ethical position. Although the claim that the unborn child is nothing more than a lump of tissue has been the common refrain for years, many prominent abortion supporters and advocates openly concede that the unborn child is in fact a genetically distinct, living human being. Such frank admissions demonstrate to the fullest extent the demonic nature of the pro-abortion position. To acknowledge the fact that the unborn child is a living human being and then to argue that a mother should have the right to choose to kill it anyway does not start one down a slippery slope. It is the pit at the bottom of the slope. It is open and unabashed advocacy of cold-blooded murder, and the murder of defenseless children at that.
Consider for a moment where that falls on the scale of ethical atrocities. The Nazis justified the extermination of the Jews by denying the full humanity of Jews. Many of those who supported the slave trade justified slavery by denying the full humanity of those races they desired to enslave. For years, many who support legal abortion have justified it in a similar way by denying the full humanity of the unborn child (defining him or her as a lump of tissue). In doing so, they place themselves alongside these historical examples of inhuman injustice. Like those throughout history who have supported monstrous levels of injustice by denying the humanity of their fellow human beings, they will be judged by history and by God.
Those supporters of abortion, however, who are advocating and defending the killing of unborn children, all the while openly admitting that these children are living human beings, are in far worse shape. It takes some work to put oneself in an ethical position that results in genocidal Nazis becoming one's ethical superiors, but those who support abortion while also admitting that unborn children are living human beings have managed to do so. By admitting that these unborn children are living human beings and supporting abortion anyway, they openly declare themselves to be in favor of the brutal killing of living human beings. They openly declare themselves to be supporters of the most monstrous form of child abuse imaginable.
So, what is the bad news for those who willingly support the killing of defenseless human beings in the wombs of their mothers? The bad news is explained in Revelation 21:8, which reads: "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death." The bad news is that "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth (Romans 1:18). "They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless" (Rom. 1:29-31).
It is important to observe that God's wrath is revealed not only against those who do these things, but it is also upon those who support those who do these things: "Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them" (Rom. 1:32). The bad news is that abortion is murder, and unrepentant murderers will face the judgment and wrath of God. They will find themselves in hell for eternity, and eternity does not end.
Is there any good news? Absolutely. "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Murder is sin, but the good news is that it is not the unforgivable sin. Israel's king David was confronted by the prophet Nathan for his sins of adultery and murder. Nathan said to David, "Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites (2 Sam. 12:9). David was forgiven, however, because when confronted with the evil of his sin, he believed God and he repented (Psalm 51). One of the greatest persecutors of the early church was a man named Saul who dragged Christians away to prison and was complicit in the killing of Stephen (Acts 8–9). Yet Saul, when he was confronted with his sin, repented and went on to become the Apostle Paul (Acts 9). Abortion is the cold-blooded murder of children—the killing of a defenseless human being—but murderers can be forgiven if they repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
